The Journey’s Signpost
This sculpture is like a signpost that points the way and shows the ongoing journey of Indigenous peoples. It’s made from remnants of an old pioneer, representing the history of this land. The weathered material reflects the passage of time, bearing witness to the struggles and stories that have shaped Indigenous communities. Intertwined within the signpost is barbed wire, a powerful symbol of pain, wounds, and the barriers that have historically divided and constrained. Just as holding or brushing against barbed wire causes scratches and scars, this element reflects the enduring wounds inflicted by colonisation, trauma, and ongoing systemic injustice. It serves as a visual reminder of the suffering endured and the resilience required to heal. Each sign on the sculpture says: Truth Telling, History, Massacres, Stolen, Generations, Policies, Oppression, Embassy, Sorry, Mabo, Referendum, Voice, Treaty and Reconciliation. These are like stops or steps along a path, asking us to think about the difficult journey toward understanding, acknowledgment, and coming together. They remind us to listen to Indigenous voices and face uncomfortable truths. By combining a pioneer’s relic with barbed wire, the sculpture shows the crossing between different worlds, settler and Indigenous, past and present. It recognises the wounds that need healing so we can move forward. My goal is to encourage conversations, awareness, and a shared commitment to truth, healing, and justice especially in the efforts toward recognition and reconciliation.
