Jaan (Family Washing Day)
When I was 12 years old my mother died, and my sister got married and moved away at that time too. It meant that I did not get to see my family very often, but some of the happiest memories I have are of the days my sister and I met up to do the washing. We would push a 45 gallon drum of water through the streets of Brisbane to boil our clothes by the river, and it would take us a whole weekend to get through all of our washing. It took a very long time and it was very tiring, but we did not mind because we also laughed a lot and had fun while we worked together.
